A Concise History Of John Deere

John Deere is one of the oldest operating agricultural equipment manufacturers in the US. The development of John Deere throughout the years closely parallels the settlement and development of the midwestern United States. It all began in 1837, when John Deere himself opened a 1,378 square-foot shop in Grand Detour, Illinois. Deere began business as a general repairman for his village, he also manufactured and sold equipment, such as pitchforks and shovels. It wasn't long until Deere began experimenting with larger more influential tools. That same year John Deere developed the first commercially successful, self-scouring steel plow. This invention was the first of many that would inevitably set John Deere apart in the agriculture industry. The steel plow would later play a pivotal role in the westward expansion into the great planes during the 19th century. 

During this time, many tools were made by order, Deere as an innovator saw a major flaw in this model. To meet current demands, Deere began manufacturing plows before listing them for sale. This allowed customers to not only see what they were buying beforehand but allowed his customers to purchase the item immediately. As word got out, John Deere began his search for expansion. In 1842 Deere saw his opportunity, partnering with Leonard Andrus. Deere would later buy out his partner and introduce his son to the company.
 

The next century would create some of the largest growth for the company, starting with the breakthrough into the tractor industry during the early 1900s. From there, the agricultural products continued to expand into combine harvesters, which included the John Deere No. 1 harvester. The Second World War opened up a new avenue of product lines. This became possible when then president, Charles Deere Wiman, enlisted as an officer to oversee the farm and machinery equipment division. 
 

The second half of the 20th century saw further expansion into international markets. Along with the expansion to international markets, John Deere experienced innovative leaps in self-propelled tractors, harvesting equipment, and rollover protective structures. Today John Deere continues to invest in innovative products, constantly pushing boundaries to make our lives easier.
